Glen and Nell Webb and a few families from nearby DeSoto, Kansas founded the Elm Grove Baptist Church in May 1965. The old Elm Grove Elementary School, built in 1885, served as our first church building. The church stayed very small under the first four pastors who served faithfully until 1973. Glen & Nell Webb remained steadfast and faithful to the Elm Grove Baptist Church, thru the years. Mr. Webb assisted in building every building, except the last. Nell Webb went home to be with the Lord in November of 2010. Mr. Webb remains faithful to this day.
The Elm Grove Baptist Church (independent in organization) called their fifth pastor, S. D. (Sandy) Seaba and his wife, Debbie, and four sons in April, 1974. He has served this church and this church only for thirty-eight years. He began with a handful of people and a one room school house for a church – no Sunday School space, no telephone, no mail box, no mission program, nothing but a few people who wanted to see a church grow.
In 1976, the church, which had grown to about 60, built an addition on the existing schoolhouse that provided the church with a needed nursery, office space, fellowship hall, five Sunday School class rooms, and two restrooms. This was sufficient until growth made it necessary to go to two services in 1981. We were now averaging about 160 people with months over 200. We were debt free and began to make plans for a 280 seat auditorium attached to the north of our 1976 addition. We dedicated this building Easter Sunday 1983 with over 400 in attendance. This new building also added Sunday School classrooms and a new fellowship hall, below the sanctuary.
Our church continued to grow and the need to expand increased. In 1991, after purchasing 2 ½ acres of land from a farmer north of the church, we built a new Family Worship Center that included a full length gymnasium with locker room facilities. A new banquet hall, as well as a prophet’s quarters for guests and another group of class rooms needed for AWANA and Sunday School were also added. Our gym provides a ministry to the community and allows us to have room for children’s activities. Our church runs three buses and a van every Sunday. This building was dedicated in 1992 and at the time the church was averaging about 207 in Sunday School.
The church put together fund raising projects and successfully paid for every project completed. In 2000 we again purchased additional land, this time 10 more acres for future growth. In 2006 we added an outdoor picnic shelter for picnics and outdoor gospel singspirations in the summer. We have certainly been blessed with nice facilities and each project was completed and paid for before a new project was started. In 2008, as the Lord continued to bless and we continued to grow, we paid off the loan for the additional land. In the early Fall of 2008 the Church Body voted to take out a construction loan to begin building a new facility that would have a 750 seat auditorium, new office space, additional classroom space, as well as a modern, secure children’s center.
We also expanded the existing fellowship hall in an effort to accommodate gatherings of up to 400. This nearly $3 million dollar addition, was completed in the fall of 2009, and the Building was dedicated on November 8th with over 700 in attendance.
Our church is a country church where over 23 towns are represented every service. God has truly blessed our Pastor and congregation as we try our best to be a Lighthouse to the surrounding community.
